Personal Focus
David was born in Hamilton, Ontario. He attended McMaster University, University of Windsor where he received a BA and Ryerson Polytechnical Institute where he took courses in Journalism.
David is married to Grace and has three children, with oldest daughter Laura from his first marriage with late wife Shirley. His two younger children are in high school. David has always lived in the Ward he represents and currently lives in Bayview Hill.
David retired in 2009 after 25 years of employment with the Government of Canada. He now devotes full time to his work of Councillor.
David has a strong commitment to seniors. One of the founders of the Richmond Hill Chinese Seniors Association, David moved on to found the Bayview Hill Seniors Program which currently operates programming for over 1000 seniors. David has helped form the York Region Indian Seniors Club.
David is a voluntary community representative on the following local school councils: Richmond Rose, Bayview Hill, Silver Stream, Christ the King. His involvement and communication enable him to find out what is going on and support our children.
David is an activist for those with developmental disabilities. The father of an autistic child, he has been an active REENA Board and REENA Foundation Board member for many years serving on most committees. David is currently working to create a Chinese Heritage Funding Agency for Developmental Disabilities. David was a Co-Chair of the group that caused Thistletown Regional Centre to stay open and is a past president of the Autism Society of Ontario, York Region Chapter.
David Cohen is active in supporting different cultural communities and new immigrant services. David has chaired or been on the committees of the Mayor’s Celebration of Chinese New Year, Norwooz, Eid, and Diwali. David has lobbied for funding for many social service and settlement agencies.
David Cohen supports business. He is presently Council’s representative on Richmond Hill Markham Chinese Business Association and Canada Pakistan Business Council. He is a member of the Association of Chinese Canadian Entrepreneurs and the Indo Canada Chamber of Commerce. David has promoted business in Richmond Hill around the world. He has been on two trade missions to Hong Kong and China and one to Pakistan. David has previously sat on the Richmond Hill Chamber of Commerce and, as Council’s representative to Smart Commute, works with this group to promote shared travel to and from work to reduce congestion.
David Cohen was Budget Chair of the Town of Richmond Hill between 1992 and 2003. For the first ten years, there were no increases in Richmond Hill property tax.
David Cohen chaired committees and championed the initial construction of the Bayview Hill Community Centre and later on its pool, fitness area and eventually seniors’ centre additions.
David Cohen was a founding member of the Don Watershed Regeneration Committee. Among other accomplishments, he led the signage for river systems that Richmond Hill put in first, but is now prominent throughout the Greater Toronto Area. David is committed to an environmentally friendly and green community. He presently sits on the Rouge Alliance and promoted the purchased of lands north of Rawlinson Park. |
