| New Town Hall for the Town of Richmond Hill |
 |
On November 24, 2008, the Town of Richmond Hill will release a report on the feasibility including cost of the Town of Richmond Hill selling the existing Administration building at 225 East Beaver Creek Road and moving to a site adjacent the Town's library at Yonge and Major Mackenzie.
The report will say that the reason's are not because the Town has outgrown the existing site nor that it will out grow the site in the next 10 to 15 years nor that the current building is dilapidated or in need or replacement. The report will indicate that the Council Chambers could be larger and that there is not ceremonial space such as in Markham at the their Town Centre.
The report, without suggests three choices of size of a new building, none costing less than 100 million dollars and none that will not require borrow nor raise your taxes higher. Although, borrowing rates in recent years were as low as 4 percent, it is suggested that the current 5.5 percent rate.
The Town of Richmond Hill will likely hold public consultation in early 2009 to get feed back on whether to build this building now. Many of the local representatives appear to have promised their constituents or implied that they will move the Town Hall. I have not made such promises.
With the current financial downturn, do you feel that this is an appropriate time for the Town to use all of it's non allocated hydro reserves, sell properties, and indeed borrow heavily to build this structure. Please read the Town website after November 24, 2008 to read the reasons they have, speak to your representatives and please give your opinion at the appropriate time.
