Councillor David Cohen works tirelessly towards community building, trying to engage residents of all ages and from diverse communities in Richmond Hill. He also actively participates in and supports the work of social service, sports, and arts organizations. See below
|
Inclusion
- Councillor Cohen was the driving force behind a series of Town events aimed at making diverse cultural communities feel welcome. He played a major role on the Organizing Committees of Mayor's Celebration of Chinese New Year, Norwooz, Eid, Diwali and, Chanukah Celebration.
- David Cohen helped bring the Iranian Fire Festival to Richmond Hill
- To provide an avenue for residents to come out and meet each other and develop a sense of community, Councillor Cohen started an annual Ward 3 BBQ several years ago. The last one held, despite poor weather, saw a turnout of over 1000 people.
- To obtain input on how best to serve the interests of children and youth, Councillor Cohen volunteers as community representative on local school councils, formerly at Christ the King Separate School and Doncrest Public School, and currently on Bayview Hill Elementary School, Richmond Rose Public School, Silver Stream Public School, and Bayview Secondary School.
- To encourage seniors to keep active physically, mentally and socially, Councillor Cohen initiated the Bayview Hill Seniors' Program, which provides ethnic communities with courses delivered in their own language. He continues to act as Chair of the Program, which boasts a current enrolment of over 1000 participants.
- Councillor Cohen helped start the Richmond Hill Chinese Seniors' Association.
- Councillor Cohen is a Founder and Honorary Advisor of the York Indian Seniors' Program.
- Councillor Cohen is a current Board Member of Faith Culture Inclusion Network, which advances the cause of provision of social services with cultural diversity based on clientele.
- Not only does Councillor Cohen support diversity, he actively brings communities from different backgrounds together to work for the common good. He is currently a Board Member of Mosaic Out of the Cold, a multi-faith organization dealing with the homeless.
Support of Social Service and Community Organizations
- Councillor David Cohen recognizes the value of the not-for-profit sector's participation in the provision of social services, and proactively encourages and facilitates social service agencies to set up shop in Richmond Hill, assisting them with any issues at the Town level.
- Councillor Cohen has helped a substantial number of organizations in terms of lobbying for government funding, governance, fundraising, building projects, and inter-agency collaboration.
- Back in 1995,David Cohen successfully led a group of families in a fight against Bob Rae government's closure of Thistletown Regional Centre for Youth, an agency that helps youths with behaviour issues. The Centre is open to this day.

- Councillor Cohen has been serving on the Board of Directors of Reena ( a not-for-profit organization providing services for people with developmental disabilities) for over 10 years in a variety of capacities
- Current Honorary Advisor to Under the Banyan Tree (providing service for people with developmental disabilities)
- Current Honorary Advisor to Spirit of Life (providing service for people with developmental disabilities)
- Current Honorary Advisor to Carefirst on special projects
- Current Board Member of Mosaic: Out of the Cold (a multi-faith organization dealing with the homeless)
- Current Board Member of Faith Culture Inclusion Network, which advances the cause of provision of social services with cultural diversity based on clientele.
- Councillor Cohen donated proceeds from the Ward 3 BBQ in support of charity. Last year proceeds went to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
- As part of his giving back to the community, Councillor Cohen launched the first David Cohen Community Outreach Fundraising Dinner in 2009, with proceeds going to Reena and York South Community Living, both organizations providing service to the developmentally disabled.
- David Cohen's efforts to serve the community do not stop with his work as Councillor. He is also a member of service clubs, including a Rotary Club and a Lions Club.
Support of Sports, Arts and Cultural Groups
- Councillor Cohen encourages youth participation in sports by sponsoring a Richmond Hill soccer team.
- Councillor Cohen is the Honorary Patron of the Canadian Sinfonietta.
Councillor David Cohen's desire to build an inclusive, harmonious community that has the benefit of good services and amenities is demonstrated by his frequent attendance, support and sponsorship of numerous community events and activities, year in and year out. His support for a variety of cultural, religious, social service, sports, arts, and service groups does not stop with those local to Richmond Hill, but throughout the Greater Toronto Area and York Region. |
